Winter Weather Safety

We have a Winter Storm Watch here in Kentucky and we thought it would be a good time to refresh on some winter safety tips.

Here are some of the popular phrases used when dealing with winter:

Winter Weather Advisory. Simply put, winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. Use caution when out and about.

Winter Storm Watch. This means that winter storm conditions are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours. If you are currently in a watch area, you should have a winter storm plan and stay informed about weather conditions.

Winter Storm Warning. This is a serious warning. It includes life-threatening, severe winter conditions have begun or will begin within 24 hours. People in a warning area should take precautions immediately. It is best to stay inside and off the roads.

If you have to leave the house, remember these safety tips:

Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing. Always have mittens and a hat that covers your ears.

Wear waterpoof boots to stay dry and warm.

Keep your gas tank full and a disaster kit in your car.

Disaster kit should include:

At least one gallon of water

3 days worth of food

Flashlight and batteries

First aid kit

Tools

Medications

Phone chargers

Cash

If you have animals, keep these tips in mind:

Bring your pets inside during cold winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure they have access to non-frozen drinking water and dry blankets or hay.

If the animals are outside, make sure their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles.

Antifreeze is a deadly poison. Do not leave it anywhere where animals could injest it.
