DEF: Diesel Exhaust Fluid

If you are tired of men knowing everything about cars, sports and equipment, now is the time to do something about it. If you want to brush up on your knowledge of diesel, you have come to the right place. Today, we have some information and an awesome video to share with you about diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).

Why does DEF matter? In 2014, all diesel engine manufacturers are going to be using DEF, from engines of pick-up trucks to school buses, from tractors to semi-trucks.

DEF is made up of about 32.5% Urea Nitrogen and 67.5% de-ionized water. Why DEF? First of all, it is non-toxic, non-flammable, colorless and non-hazardous. And secondly, it is both safe and easy to use. And the benefits are great. DEF lowers the NOx concentration in the diesel exhaust emissions that comes from your diesel engine.

What's NOx? Nitrous Oxide, which is what we get when Nitrogen and Oxygen react during combustion. NOx causes air pollution, especially at high temperatures.

DEF is extremely sensitive to contamination, so it's important to handle it the right way. Contamination can cause your truck or equipment to increase consumption, can cause damage to the equipment or even cause the engine to shut down. Here is a great video from Thunder Creek Equipment that explains this in more detail and can help you understand how to properly handle DEF.
